Davenport 2011
First of all, Id like to thank Leroy Lange for donating his vending spot to HarleyHummer.com! By doing so, we were able to meet many existing customers and finally put a face to a name! In addition we were able to make new friends, and of course, reunite with old friends! Tom VanBeek, Stan Waite, Bruce McKenzi, Bud Cole, just to name a few! Thank you Leroy!
The swap meet had plenty of vendors, but I did notice a small amount of vacant vending spots. In my opinion, attendance was also light as a result. I guess the heat and high gasoline prices had taken their toll.
My girlfriend Diana and I had a chance to take a brief walk throughout the swap meet and look for a few good deals. We found a 1958 125 Hummer that was 80% complete. The bike is barn fresh and still sports the original Tropical Coral paint under an amature white paint job. Hopefully the old white paint will peel off with the pressure washer? The bike has such an unique look to it, it actually has a vintage patina! The engine still turns over, has a bobbed rear fender, and missing a horn, but otherwise complete with a luggage rack and speedometer! I tried to walk away from it, but later I returned, and I could not resist any longer. Needless to say, it followed us home.
I also saw a few parts here and there, a rare 1966 Bobcat, and a restored 1948 Model 125 that was a beauty, priced at $10,000 ! Generally speaking, Hummer parts were few and far between. But then again, we only had a chance to tour the swap meet briefly.
Friday afternoon, we "closed shop", to go racing!
We exited the swap meet area, and entered the race track. We got situated in the pits, in turn 1, where a lot of the hummer racers converge. It was great to see so many familar faces! Mike Magee, Al Blum, Linda Blum, Cody Evans, Cynthia Cory, Kenny Thomas, just to name a few! We unloaded the race bike and all the equipment including spare parts, tools, leathers, helmet, etc.
There were 10 to 12 Hummer race bikes present, which is a lot! There was a time, maybe 7 or 8 years ago, when the number of hummer racers dwindled down to 5 or 7 and the Davenport race officials threatened to eliminate the "165 cc class", unless we had more racers, so it was great to see such a large turn out! If anyone else is thinking about racing a vintage Hummer, please do so! The more hummers we have racing, the better!
We had 2 practice sessions. Each practice session consisted of 4 laps around a 1/2 mile dirt track. Great for working out any bugs one might have, and trust me, several hummers had issues. Afterall, these little Hummers are pushing their limits, exceeding 60 mph on a 1/2 mile dirt track!
Next was the heat race or qualifying. This is where things got very interesting, VERY INTERESTING !
The green flag told us it was time to go! I suddenly found myself in front, and leading the heat race! Words can not explain what it feels like, to be out in front, nobody except silence, in front of you, yet competition right behind! Hummers just behind me, screamin so loud, it sounded like I was getting chased down by a swarm of hornets! I was down low, as low as I could go, just coming out of turn 4, only one more lap to go! I had the throttle wide open, and I could "feel" Cody Evans and Linda Blum to my right and a just a short distance behind. Imagine 3 hummers side by side, doing 50 or 60 mph, coming out of turn 4, down the main drag, and wide open!
All of a sudden, a GROUND HOG appears out of nowhere, on the track, just maybe 20 yards in front of me! The ground hog ran and stopped right where I needed to be....right in my line of travel. I was already hugging the white line, so I could not go left any lower. I knew I had company to my right, so I had no choice but to continue straight as an arrow toward this "suicidal" ground hog. When I got within 10 yards or so, the ground hog began running again, to my right, up the track, and guess what?
Cody Evans nailed the critter, and managed to keep his Harley Hummer race machine up! Thank God no one was injured. Except the ground hog of course!
Rumor has it that the paramedics carried the critter off the track, and it was pronounced "dead on arrival" by track officials! Next year, Ground Hog Day will have a new meaning to a few of us Hummer Racers!
On to the main event! The moment we were all waiting for!
Initially 10 to12 Hummer Racers were in attendance for the main event. But after 2 practice sessions, a hot heat race, and 1 dead ground hog, only 8 hummer racers made it to the main event.
Barry Baker took the hole-shot on his Mike Magee owned machine. Cody Evans eventually took the #1 spot away from Barry and dominated to take the checkered flag. Alan Lyons finished third, and Linda Blum took home the 4th place posistion. And interesting to note, track officials accidentally lost count of laps. ???
The Main Event was supposed to be a 5 lap race around the infamous Davenport 1/2 Mile flat track. Instead, it turned out to be a 6 lap race! I dont know what happened exactly, but it was a 6 lap race, instead of 5. As a result, race results as follows, and please correct us if incorrect as these results are unofficial:
#1- Cody Evans (the Ground Hog killer)
#2- Barry Baker
#3- Al Lyons
#4- Linda Blum
#5- Wayne Albertson
#6- Steve Thomas
#7- Kenny Thomas
#8- Cynthia Cory
I would like to conclude by saying that words cannot explain how much fun we all had. God willing we'll see you all next year!
KEEP ON HUMMMMMMMMMMIN!

Nearly 105 years in the making, the Harley-Davidson Museum, located near downtown Milwaukee, opened its doors to the public on Saturday, July 12. The 130,000-square-foot Museum adds a whole new dimension to the Harley-Davidson experience. Visitors will get a feel for the freedom, camaraderie and pride that Harley-Davidson riders experience every time they fire up their motorcycles.
Within the walls of the Harley-Davidson Museum you will find motorcycles and artifacts that tell the story of the Motor Company's rich history and heritage. Every gallery and exhibit inside is an astonishing testimony to the legendary bikes, the people who built them and, of course, every individual who ever felt their powerful rumble on a long stretch of asphalt.
